The East Bay Economic Development Alliance (EDA) HAS ITSa nEW Executive Director!
Karen Engel has been selected as the East Bay EDA's new Executive Director, beginning August 7, 2010.
Karen is taking the place of Bruce Kern, who retired on July 9, 2010. Bruce served as East Bay EDA's Executive Director since the organization was established in 1990 as a task force of the County to help replace the jobs that were lost due to the military base closures (the Naval Air Station, Alameda; the Oak Knoll Navy Hospital; Oakland Army Base; and the Oakland Fleet and Industrial Supply Center).
That task force became a committee of the County that was also commissioned by the 14-city Mayors Council of Alameda County as the Economic Development Advisory Board (EDAB). As the organization established its own leadership and structure, its name was changed to the Economic Development Alliance for Business (EDAB). Contra Costa County cities and then the County joined and in 2005, its name was again changed to reflect the its increasing bi-county representation and mission - to the East Bay Economic Development Alliance (EDA).
A non-profit has been established, and the 800 plus EDA members, 123 Board of Directors, 36 Executive Committee members, representing a diverse group of public, private, education, non-profit, labor and community leaders, are continuing to address the challenges and opportunities each year brings.
The Bay EDA's staff support is provided by Alameda County, with 6 full-time employees located in the County Administrator's office, at 1221 Oak Street, 5th Floor, in Oakland, CA.
